Today I decided to try to make a vegan quiche because D doesn’t take too kindly to dairy and it’s Father’s Day after all. If you’re not going to use cheese or eggs, this quiche has to have a lot of strong flavors to help it out. I chose red bell peppers, garlic, fresh chives and rosemary, and lots of Spike seasoning. It was not bad. But I learned that you HAVE to have a crust if you’re going to make a tofu based quiche, and I think I should have added some onion powder and some fake bacon, or maybe mushrooms.
Breakfast in bed for my husband also included real Champagne, which everyone should have at least once in their life. Booze is by far the most important component to a Sunday brunch. It really doesn’t get any better than sharing a bubbly and bright glass of Taittinger with a loved one on a Sunday.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
I went to a holiday BBQ this weekend, and instead of bringing pasta salad or potato salad, I thought I might try something different. I made an herbed cream cheese with fresh chives, fresh basil and oregano, some salt and a pinch of cayenne. I then put cute dollops of this cream cheese on cucumber slices. The presentation was good, but the taste was just ok. Should I have added garlic? Butter? Different herbs? I’d like some input here because herbed cream cheese is a good recipe to have under your belt. I’d like to try again soon.
(Sorry I didn’t take pictures of the cucumber bites!)
Kid Friendly Gluten and Dairy Free Pancake Bites
3/4 Cup Gluten Free Pancake Mix
1/2 Cup Rice or Soy Milk
1/4 Cup Maple Syrup
Mix well and add bacon, sausage or blueberries, fill greased mini muffin pan and pop in 350 degree oven for 14 minutes
P.S. These were just OK. The fact that they’re super easy to make with ingredients you probably have lying around anyway makes them a good option for parents who don’t feel like fussing with a proper brunch on a lazy Sunday morning.
1. Arthur (the original with Dudley Moore)
2. The Princess Bride
3. Better Off Dead
4. Napoleon Dynamite
5. The Hangover
Agree or disagree?
One Sunday morning about five years ago, after a long night of drinking, I ordered my first Bloody Mary, and am so glad I did. The cool thing about this morning time, sometimes early afternoon cocktail, is that it’s a glass of mostly tomato juice topped off with some meaty olives and a celery stick. What could be more reviving and refreshing after a rough Saturday night? The vodka needs to be respectable, which means no plastic containers (cheap vodka will worsen your condition). I personally prefer Stoli because of its quality, and it won’t break the bank. Secondly, make it your own. Of course everyone has their own version, which undoubtedly is “the best” (I’ve seen bartenders add Clamato, mustard, Merlot, even buffalo wing sauce), but my favorite is a variation of D’s recipe. This morning we realized we were out of Tapatio, so we used some Taco Bell hot sauce, and it was delish.
